Rising Global Pecan Force: South African Industry Representatives Discuss Tariff Risks and Highlights From Hefei Nut Expo

May 21, 2025

At the recent China Nut Expo in Hefei, South Africa’s pecan industry presented its premium products and strong export capabilities at a dedicated pavilion. The South African Pecan Nut Producers Association organized the participation, with eight leading processors engaging directly with current and prospective Chinese buyers. Cobus van Rensburg, general manager of SAPPA, also presented at the expo’s roundtable session, sharing insights into South Africa’s pecan production and export development.

During the expo, Produce Report interviewed industry representatives to better understand the sector’s current development and outlook.

South Africa’s pecan industry has developed rapidly in recent years. With ideal growing conditions, steadily expanding production, stable political ties to China and a strong export focus, South African pecans are gaining favor among Chinese importers.

South African Pecan Production: Ideal Growing Environment and Harvest Timing for China Market

In 2024, South Africa’s total pecan production reached 37,157 metric tons, with 33,708 metric tons exported in-shell — over 90% of the crop. This production volume marks a dramatic rise from just 9,861 metric tons in 2014 — nearly a fourfold increase in 10 years, underscoring the sector’s strong upward trajectory.

South Africa’s climate — hot, dry summers and mild winters — provides ideal conditions for pecan cultivation. Key growing regions include the Northern Cape, Free State and North West provinces, where abundant land and favorable weather support high-quality output.

The harvest season typically runs from May to September, after the first frost prompts natural leaf drop. This timing enables South African pecans to arrive ahead of peak demand for major cultural and shopping festivals, including National Day, Mid-Autumn Festival, Double 11, Double 12 and Chinese New Year — ensuring timely, high-quality supply.

China: The Core Export Destination

Industry representatives confirm that over 90% of South Africa’s in-shell pecans are exported to China, making it the industry’s dominant market. Chinese consumers appreciate pecans not only for their flavor and nutrition but also for their role in gifting traditions.

South African pecans have built a strong reputation among Chinese buyers for quality, consistency and reliability, helping solidify the country’s position as a trusted partner during key consumption periods.

Navigating Market Challenges: Trade Tensions and Demand Stability

Industry representatives noted that the ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China could negatively impact the pecan market by:

  • Weakening consumer purchasing power, reducing overall consumption
  • Lowering supply

As a premium nut, pecans are vulnerable to shifts in consumer behavior under economic pressure.

In response, South African exporters are prioritizing long-term, stable relationships with Chinese buyers, ensuring consistent supply and reinforcing trust. This approach aims to further strengthen South Africa’s role as China’s preferred pecan origin amid global uncertainties.
