Maersk Opens New Packing and Cold Chain Logistics Center in Northern Peru

July 15, 2025

According to a news release on Maersk’s official website, the company has officially opened a new packing and cold chain logistics center in Olmos, Peru. The facility is designed to enable rapid transportation from farm to port, supporting the country’s growing fruit export demand.

The logistics center is strategically located in the heart of northern Peru’s agricultural corridor. It includes facilities for packing, sorting and cold storage and is expected to handle over 10,000 metric tons of fruit in its first year. Olmos, situated in the Lambayeque region, has quickly emerged as one of Peru’s most dynamic agricultural zones. According to Peru’s National Institute of Statistics and Informatics, Lambayeque is currently the country’s leading fruit-exporting region. In 2024, Peru’s fruit exports saw strong growth, with avocado and blueberry exports rising by 29.2% and 35.7%, respectively.

The center is reportedly capable of processing 38 metric tons of avocados and mangos per hour and 4.5 metric tons of blueberries per hour. It houses 4,600 bins across climate-controlled and refrigerated rooms, along with two storage chambers for finished goods, which together provide space for 2,088 pallets. Seven rapid cooling tunnels, each with 18 positions, are dedicated to maintaining the freshness of blueberries. The facility is also equipped with specialized pre-cooling systems specifically designed for blueberries — a critical step in post-harvest treatment that rapidly removes field heat, extends shelf life and helps preserve fruit quality during transport.

Situated close to key plantations, the center integrates essential logistics functions — including processing, cold storage and depot warehousing — providing a seamless connection to Maersk’s global end-to-end supply chain network. Additional value-added services include container depot management, refrigerated inland transportation and customs clearance at origin.

Covering 17,500 square meters, this is the first facility of its kind in northern Peru, providing end-to-end cold chain services from harvest to export. It specializes in the post-harvest treatment of three major export fruits — avocados, blueberries and mangos — managing the entire process from field picking and processing to packaging, cold storage and final delivery to the port. The center also offers cold storage services for other packed produce such as grapes, ensuring flexible support for a wide range of seasonal fruit exports.
