First Cambodian Longan Shipment to China Enters Final Sprint

October 29, 2022

According to a report in the Phnom Penh Post, the first official shipment of Cambodian longans to China should be delivered during November. These longans, with a total expected weight of 50–80 metric tons, are scheduled to be loaded into two to four standard 20-foot shipping containers and exported by the Cambodian company Pechenda Fruit Production PFP Co. Ltd.

Located in northwestern Battambang province’s Phnom Proek, Pechenda’s core business lies in processing a wide range of agricultural products, including longans, mangos and pineapples. Phot Saphanborey, board director and chief of the company, said that by working with the Cambodian Longan Cooperative Federation, Pechenda buys longans directly from local farmers with farm gate prices hovering around 3,000 Cambodian riel ($0.72).

The company is reportedly considering two options for sending the first Cambodian longan shipment to China. One option is to depart from Phnom Penh Autonomous Port and pass through Vietnam, while the other is to set out from Sihanoukville Autonomous Port and go directly to China. It takes about 10 days to complete the journey in both cases.

Cambodian longans are often referred to as Pailin longans irrespective of whether they are actually grown in Pailin province, which is one of the country’s key longan-producing regions. In 2021, Cambodia had a planted area for longans of over 18,000 hectares with a crop of 131,000 metric tons. The harvest season for Pailin longans generally lasts from August to late December, with production hitting a peak in November.
