The bigger the market, the bigger the demand. With consumer spending on fresh fruit and vegetables in Europe increasing to an expected €800bn by 2030*, the importance of the global fresh produce industry’s leading exhibition FRUIT LOGISTICA also continues to grow.

As Thai durians continue to gain in popularity throughout China, Yonghui Superstores, a retail chain giant, recently paid a visit to Thailand to directly procure a wide variety of fruit from their source of origin. For a first-hand account, Produce Report interviewed Mr. Perry Zheng, a representative of the company, who went into further detail about Yonghui’s sourcing strategy.

Customers at a Walmart store at Wanda Plaza in the southeastern coastal city of Xiamen can now scan certain packaged vegetables with their phone to see the vegetable’s history going back to the farm. The company hopes to eventually roll out the project nationally, and said that it hoped to achieve traceability for 40% of its packaged vegetable SKUs in China by 2020.

Carrefour’s 4,000m² retail concept Le Marché is the latest entry in China’s now-crowded field of “new retail” supermarket brands: small to midsize supermarkets with an emphasis on fresh ingredients and prepared food.
