Planasa Boosts Presence in Chinese Blueberry Market With Meiming Deal

October 23, 2023

Spanish agricultural giant Planasa has successfully acquired the remaining 50% stake in Yunnan Meiming Agriculture Company, further cementing its position in the Chinese blueberry market.

Planasa, a renowned player in the berry cultivation sector, was originally established in 1973 by the Darbonne family from France. The company is headquartered in Spain’s Navarra autonomous region and is a leading producer of a wide range of berries, including blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries, along with various berry seedlings. Planasa ventured into the Chinese market in 2017 through a partnership with Yunnan Meiming Agriculture Company, which was founded by French agricultural engineer siblings Martin and Thomas Dabilly. With this recent transaction, Planasa has now secured full ownership of its Chinese subsidiary.

Meiming Agriculture is primarily focused on seedling cultivation and the commercialization of Planasa’s blueberry varieties in Songming County, Kunming. The company offers cultivation and technical services to prominent clients within China. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Meiming Agriculture adapted its core business direction, shifting from raspberry exports to the cultivation of blueberry seedlings. In 2021, the company took the significant step of applying for patents for six independently cultivated blueberry seedling varieties. At present, the cooperative planting area spans more than 400 hectares.

Planasa operates eight nurseries in diverse climate zones around the world, covering a vast area of over 1,500 hectares. In addition to offering numerous varieties of blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries, the company also has substantial experience in the production of other fruits and vegetables, including garlic, avocados and asparagus.
