China Remains Vietnam’s Top Fruit and Vegetable Supplier in 2024

June 12, 2025

According to Vietnamese media reports, imported fruits have experienced robust growth on the Vietnamese market and are expected to sustain this momentum in 2025.

In 2024, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable imports totaled $2.42 billion, marking a 23.7% year-on-year increase. According to data from Vietnam Customs, the country sourced fruits and vegetables from 16 major markets, with five of these accounting for over $100 million each, collectively representing 80% of the total import value.

China maintained its position as Vietnam’s leading fruit and vegetable supplier, with the import value reaching $993 million, accounting for 41% of the total and representing a 25% year-on-year increase. Chinese-produced fruits, including apples, oranges and table grapes, are highly competitive in price and visually appealing, allowing them to secure a significant share of the Vietnamese market.

The United States ranked second, with an import value of $543 million, reflecting a 64% increase compared with 2023. Key imports included cherries, table grapes, apples, blueberries and pears. However, U.S. fruits face significant challenges due to high tariffs, such as 20% on plums, 15% on blueberries and 20% on oranges, which drive up retail prices for Vietnamese consumers.

Besides China and the United States, Australia, Myanmar, New Zealand, South Korea and Thailand were also key suppliers to Vietnam. Imports from Australia totaled $151 million, primarily comprising cherries, seedless black grapes and green apples. Imports from Myanmar demonstrated strong growth, rising by 34.6% to reach $138 million.

Within the ASEAN region, Vietnam sourced a variety of fruits from Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and Laos. Imports from Thailand reached $62.1 million, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 33.5%. Conversely, imports from Cambodia and Laos declined by 5.8% and 57.3%, respectively, highlighting Vietnam’s strategic shift toward prioritizing high-quality and more stable supplies from more developed countries.

In East Asia, apart from China, South Korea stood out as another key partner, with imports totaling $56.2 million. Korean fruits such as pears, table grapes and red apples are highly popular on the Vietnamese market owing to their appealing appearance, high sweetness and strict food safety controls. Meanwhile, imports from India, once a significant supplier, declined by 17.3% to $57.5 million, highlighting how intense competition from other countries is steadily diminishing India’s position in this sector.
