Australian apple growers, industry representatives and government stakeholders gathered in Beijing last week to celebrate a significant milestone for the industry following mainland Australian apples gaining market access to China in 2025.

Hosted by His Excellency Scott Dewar, Ambassador of Australia to the People’s Republic of China, at the Ambassador’s Residence in Beijing, “A Celebration of Australian Apples” brought together representatives from across industry, government and trade to recognize the opportunities created through access to one of the world’s largest fresh produce markets.

China’s strong demand for premium imported fruit presents an important opportunity for Australian growers, with Australian apples recognized internationally for their quality, freshness and flavor.

The event also acknowledged the collective efforts of growers, industry organizations and government agencies, including the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, that helped make market access possible.

Chair of the Horticulture Innovation Australia Board Julie Bird said that the milestone reflected years of commitment and collaboration across industry and government.

“The opening of the Chinese market for mainland Australian apples represents a significant achievement for Australia and provides an opportunity to continue building awareness of Australian apples with customers across China.”

“Milestones such as this are important steps in supporting the sector’s longer-term export growth ambitions, helping to diversify markets and create new opportunities for Australian growers.”

Apple and Pear Australia Limited chief executive officer Philip Turnbull said that the industry was excited about the opportunities ahead: “Australian growers take enormous pride in producing premium apples recognized for their quality, freshness, crispness and flavor.”

“Market access for Australian mainland apples to China is the culmination of many years of technical work, persistence and constructive engagement between our governments and industries.”

“This is an exciting new chapter for our industry, and we look forward to building a sustainable, long-term export pathway that delivers value for Australian growers and our partners and customers in China.”

Elliot Jones, general manager of WA Farm Direct, said that the early results highlighted the value of access to the Chinese market for Australian growers: “Since gaining access to the Chinese market, we’ve exported more than 800 tonnes of apples.”

“That result reflects the opportunities that exist when Australian growers can connect with customers in China and continue building long-term relationships in market.”

As Australian mainland apples establish their presence in China, industry efforts will focus on building awareness and demand, strengthening customer relationships and developing sustainable long-term export opportunities for growers.
