Australia’s Avocado Oversupply Fuels Export Growth

April 09, 2026

According to Australian media reports, following a bumper harvest of Hass avocados in Western Australia, Queensland’s Shepard avocados have also experienced a record harvest, resulting in an oversupply on the domestic market.

Lawrence Massasso, a grower in Far North Queensland and director of Avocados Australia, stated that the surplus avocados are being sent to international markets, driving exports to record levels. This season, 20% of Australia’s Shepard avocados have been exported overseas, up from just 10% in previous years.

Matthew Watt, managing director of Watt Exports, highlighted that international demand, particularly from Asia, has grown significantly. Asian consumers have become more familiar with avocados and are increasingly incorporating them into their daily diets. The company now exports approximately 10,000 cartons of avocados to Asia each week, up from about 4,000 cartons just five years ago. Key markets include Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia, with demand from Indonesia and Cambodia also continuing to rise.

Australian avocados have recently secured market access to Thailand, India and Japan, while negotiations for access to China are still ongoing. In late 2025, Avocados Australia signed a memorandum of understanding with Shanghai markets valued at approximately 250 million Australian dollars (US$177 million). Once Australian avocados are granted approval by the General Administration of Customs of China, Western Australian growers will be ready to begin shipping immediately.

Despite strong international demand and higher exports, the surplus supply has caused avocado prices to drop in Australian supermarkets. The price has fallen to as low as AU$0.90 (US$0.64) each, making it nearly impossible for growers to cover their production costs.
