Ningbo Port Fresh Fruit Imports Skyrocket as Shipments Skip Shanghai

May 22, 2022

The Port of Ningbo, which lies just south of Shanghai, saw sharp increases in its fruit import volumes during the first quarter of 2022, followed by record volumes in April, according to data released by the local customs authority on May 17. This was apparently the result of shipments of fresh fruit and other fruit products being diverted from Shanghai, which has been under varying levels of lockdown since late March in response to a COVID-19 outbreak.

From January to April, the Port of Ningbo registered fruit imports totaling 19,000 tons with a value of 140 million Chinese yuan ($20.9 million), corresponding to year-on-year increases of 438.6% and 81.9%, respectively. The 14,000 tons of fruit imports passing through the port in April represented a year-on-year increase of 10.4 times and set a new record for monthly fruit imports.

Ningbo is nearby the Jiaxing fruit wholesale market, with convenient transportation links. This means that fresh fruit imported via the Port of Ningbo can quickly enter the market after customs clearance. At present, the customs clearance time for the whole process of importing fruit at Ningbo has been reduced to one week.

Shipments of fruit from Vietnam, among which dragon fruit is a key product, have reportedly taken advantage of this diversion away from locked-down Shanghai and to Jiaxing market via the Port of Ningbo. The 14,000 tons of Vietnamese fruit imported through the port from January to April accounted for nearly 74% of total fruit imports.
