The first official shipment of Vietnamese fresh passion fruit bound for China—weighing in at 18.4 metric tons—departed from Vietnam on Nov. 27 and was scheduled to enter China’s Guangxi region through the Friendship Pass, according to a report from China’s CCTV news. After customs clearance, inspection and quarantine, these passion fruit will be transported to plants for processing purposes.
Vietnamese passion fruit have been officially permissible for import into China under a pilot scheme since July 1, 2022, but the border crossings allowed to deal with the imports were initially only limited to Dongxing Port and Pingxiang Port. In August, China’s General Administration of Customs issued another announcement indicating that all overland border crossings in Guangxi are eligible to handle fresh passion fruit imports from Vietnam. During October and November when China’s domestic passion fruit season draws to a close, the availability window of Vietnamese passion fruit is just opening up.
In the first ten months of 2022, 203,000 metric tons of agricultural products from Vietnam were imported into China via the Friendship Pass, 199,000 metric tons of which were fruit—year-on-year increases of 46.7% and 58.1%, respectively.
