ASOEX President Gives Opening Address at International Fruit Expo 2023

September 06, 2023

The International Fruit Expo 2023 concluded successfully in Guangzhou on Sept. 3. Jointly organized by the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-Products (CFNA) and the China Fruit Marketing Association (CFMA), the expo covered an exhibition area of 23,000 square meters and attracted more than 260 exhibitors from over 20 countries and regions.

Iván Marambio, president of the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association (ASOEX), delivered an inaugural speech at the event, highlighting the role of ASOEX in this key market. According to Marambio, “China’s fruit retail market is valued at over 1 trillion yuan, showing strong growth in import, production and export. Currently, durians, cherries, and bananas top the list of imported fruits by China in terms of value. Chile is the leading origin country of imported cherries for China. Our industry is committed to the development of the Chinese market. We are optimistic about the coming season for Chilean fruits and the Chinese consumer demand, despite some inevitable challenges.”

In his speech, Marambio emphasized the long-term friendship cherished by the people of both China and Chile, as well as the partnerships established between the Chilean industry and importers, distributors and trustworthy retailers in China based on the high-quality fruits grown and produced in Chile. He said, “We work in concerted efforts to promote the growth of consumer demand through continuous promotional campaigns. We are committed to making resources available to the industry and transferring advanced knowledge and best practices. For example, through the organization of workshops to develop new regional markets and exchange visions, as in the case of the Wuhan Wholesale Market. We also invest in the development of informative materials, such as the Cherries Trade Statistic Manual and the Chilean Cherries Best Practice Guide to be released soon.”

The inauguration of the Fruits from Chile stand after the opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the CFMA, the CFNA, the Consulate General of Chile in Guangzhou, and the Jiangnonghui and Jiaxing fruit wholesale markets.

On Sept. 2, a workshop held by the Chilean Cherry Committee revealed the promotional campaigns for Chilean cherries planned for the upcoming season. Over 200 importers, distributors and retailers participated in the workshop.

Alongside Marambio, other members of the Chilean delegation to the International Fruit Expo included Claudia Soler, executive director of the Chilean Cherry Committee; Andrés Armstrong, executive director of the Chilean Blueberry Committee; Carlos Cruzat, president of the Chilean Kiwifruit Committee; Monserrat Valenzuela, executive director of the Chilean Citrus Committee; Ignacio Caballero, ASOEX’s global marketing director; and Charif Christian Carvajal, ASOEX’s marketing director for Asia and Europe. The 15 Chilean fruit exporting companies participating in the event with ASOEX spoke highly of the expo, saying that it exceeded their expectations.
