Celebrating the Launch of Mainland Australian Cherries in China!

2018/19 is the the first in which significant volumes of mainland Australia cherries will be sent by air freight to China. The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries held an Australian Cherry Launch event in Shanghai on November 6 to celebrate the new market access and give potential Chinese buyers a taste of this year’s early season cherries freshly flown in from Australia. Key fruit purchasers told Produce Report they are excited about the availability of high-quality Australian cherries earlier in the southern hemisphere season.

'Romancing the Trees' with Kyle Mathison of Stemilt Growers

Kyle is part of the fourth generation of Mathisons to farm the land in the Wenatchee area, with his great grandfather having planted his first apple, pear and cherry orchards there in 1914. Kyle’s father Tom Mathison founded Stemilt Growers in 1964 after becoming among the first cherry grower/packers in the United States to start employing modern cold chain practices. Tom gave Kyle the responsibility of running the pear and cherry side of Stemilt’s operation in 1969 when he was 17 years old — and he’s been “romancing the trees” ever since.

GSF's First Ever Farm Trains Chinese Vegetable Growers in Global Best Practices

In 2016 GSF Fresh started supplying its Guangzhou processing facility with lettuce grown on its own farm in Malong county. This was a first for the Golden State Foods group, which does not typically own its own farms, but instead builds sourcing partnerships with trusted growers and then handles processing and distribution. The farm not only fills seasonal supply gaps for QSR customers in China and Southeast Asia, but also serves as a model farm and G.A.P. training base for GSF Fresh’s other vegetable suppliers.
