Westfalia Fruit Sets Out Vision for Next Phase of Avocado Growth in Asia [1]

Submitted by Momo [2] on Sun, 09/27/2026 - 22:11

At the 2026 edition of Asia Fruit Logistica [3], Westfalia Fruit [4], a global leader in the avocado industry, shared its insights into Asia’s avocado sector. The analysis pointed out that the next phase of avocado growth in Asia will no longer rely solely on increasing sales volumes — as regional markets gradually mature, understanding how consumers choose, eat and experience avocados is becoming increasingly important. This requires companies to adopt a more integrated approach spanning variety research and development, growing, ripening, product development, and category promotion.

The market situations in China, Japan, South Korea and India demonstrate that Asia cannot be treated as a single, homogeneous avocado market. Consumer habits, quality expectations, sales channels and preferred formats all vary significantly from country to country.

Westfalia Fruit has already built brand awareness in China’s wholesale market [5], with strong recognition among importers, retailers and tea beverage channels. Westfalia Fruit noted that in China avocados are increasingly being used in drinks and food applications alongside fresh consumption. About 30% of avocados are used as ingredients for tea beverages, such as bubble tea. Meanwhile, processed products such as avocado powder have begun to widely replace fresh fruit in the tea beverage and food processing industries. In particular, Chinese consumers show a strong desire to explore different ways of eating avocados. Pairings such as avocado with soy sauce and Chinese-style avocado dishes have greatly expanded the range of avocado consumption occasions.

Japan is a highly quality-focused market, where appearance and consistent quality are particularly important. South Korea combines fresh demand with opportunities across avocado-based processed products. India is developing rapidly, with more and more consumers discovering avocados and retail, foodservice and e-commerce channels expanding quickly.

In India [6], for example, to mitigate the losses caused by consumers habitually squeezing avocados to judge ripeness, Westfalia Fruit has partnered with leading retail customers to introduce a ripeness indicator called the Ripe-O-Meter. Consumers can simply place an avocado on the unit and learn whether it is ready to eat immediately or needs more time to ripen. In a market where avocado awareness is still relatively low, this device helps consumers improve their eating experience.

“Asia’s avocado market is entering a new phase,” said Hans Boyum, customer director for developing markets at Westfalia Fruit. “Increasing sales alone cannot drive the next stage of growth. We need to understand why consumers choose avocados, how they enjoy them, and how to improve the eating experience. Consumer expectations differ from market to market, so our focus goes far beyond simply supplying more fruit.”

This means increasingly working backward from consumer demand. Insights into taste, ripeness, fruit size, convenience and eating experience not only influence how fruit is supplied and marketed today but also guide product development and the direction of future avocado variety selection. The company’s business covers research, variety development, growing and sourcing, packing and ripening, ready-to-eat products, distribution, and category management, enabling it to trace consumer demand all the way back to the very front end of the value chain.
