On July 3, the China Chain Store & Franchise Association [3] released its annual ranking [4] of China’s top 100 supermarket chains for 2025. According to the report, the top 100 supermarket companies generated 885.5 billion Chinese yuan ($130.2 billion) in sales in 2025 and operated 21,027 stores nationwide. Among them, 91 companies remained on the list for a second consecutive year. On a like-for-like basis, these companies recorded 5.4% year-on-year sales growth, while their total store count declined by 5.4%.

The top 10 companies on the list generated a combined 598.6 billion yuan ($88.0 billion) in sales, accounting for 67.6% of the top 100’s total sales, and operated 10,373 stores, representing 49.3% of the top 100’s total store count.

The top 10 companies, in descending order, were Walmart China (Walmart and Sam’s Club), Freshippo (Freshippo and Freshippo NB [5]), RT-Mart (RT-Mart, RT-Mart Super and M Club), Wumart Group (Wumart and Metro China), Yonghui Superstores, Lianhua Supermarket (Century Lianhua, Lianhua, Hualian and Quik), Jiajiayue Group (Jiajiayue and SPAR), Qiandama, DL Supermarket and Zhongbai Warehouse (Zhongbai Warehouse and Zhongbai Supermarket). Among them, DL Supermarket broke into the top 10 for the first time, climbing to 9th place from 19th place in the previous year’s ranking [6].

A total of 15 companies on the list generated annual sales of 10 billion yuan ($1.47 billion) or more, up from 12 in the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of companies with annual sales exceeding 100 billion yuan ($14.7 billion) increased to two, highlighting the continued consolidation of China’s supermarket sector.

Walmart China retained the top position for the fifth consecutive year, generating 195.9 billion yuan ($28.8 billion) in sales and maintaining double-digit growth. Its sales exceeded the combined revenue of the second- and third-ranked companies. Meanwhile, Freshippo overtook RT-Mart with 107 billion yuan ($15.7 billion) in sales, becoming the latest retailer to join China’s 100 billion yuan ($14.7 billion) club.

Among the top 10 companies, Zhongbai Warehouse recorded the steepest sales decline, down by 30.1% year on year, followed by Yonghui Superstores (−20.7%) and RT-Mart (−11.9%). Their store counts also fell by 32.4%, 48.0% and 0.6%, respectively.

Only four of the top 10 companies achieved year-on-year sales growth. DL Supermarket led with an impressive 56.2% increase, followed by Freshippo (+42.7%) and Walmart China (+23.3%). Their store counts grew by 8.3%, 86.5% and 2.4%, respectively.

Across the top 100 companies, 47 recorded year-on-year sales growth, while 32 expanded their store networks. Among them, 25 achieved growth in both sales and store count. Approximately 60% of the companies improved their sales per store, while the contribution of online sales continued to increase. Online sales accounted for 19.7% of total revenue, up by 2.8% from the previous year.
