Affordable Chinese Kiwifruit Proving Popular in Vietnam [1]

According to Vietnamese media reports [3], kiwifruit from China are currently retailing at 80,000–120,000 Vietnamese dong ($3.08–4.62) per kilogram in supermarkets across Vietnam, partially breaking the long-standing market dominance of kiwifruit from New Zealand and France.

In supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City, green-fleshed Chinese kiwifruit are being sold at 49,000 dong ($1.88) per carton (six pieces), while yellow-fleshed kiwifruit are priced at 69,000 dong ($2.65) per carton, with each carton weighing about 550–600 grams. Meanwhile, red-fleshed kiwifruit are selling for 49,000 dong ($1.88) per carton (four pieces), weighing about 450 grams, equivalent to roughly 109,000 dong ($4.19) per kilogram, significantly lower than the price of imported red-fleshed kiwifruit from other countries [4].

At major retail chains such as Go!, Bach Hoa Xanh and Kingfood, most lower-priced kiwifruit are sourced from China. For example, at WinMart supermarkets, green-fleshed kiwifruit from New Zealand sell for about 139,000 dong ($5.35) per kilogram. Although this price is already lower than in previous years, it remains significantly higher than that of Chinese imports.

Representatives from several retail chains noted that in previous years, kiwifruit on supermarket shelves mainly originated from New Zealand, while Chinese kiwifruit were primarily sold through online platforms or budget fruit stores. In recent years, however, the quality of Chinese kiwifruit has improved significantly, with a more uniform appearance and full compliance with traceability requirements. Numerous products have now entered supermarket channels with clearly labeled origins.

In fruit stores, Chinese kiwifruit are being sold at even lower prices. In many places, green-fleshed kiwifruit are priced at around 45,000 dong ($1.73) per carton, or approximately 60,000–70,000 dong ($2.31–2.69) per kilogram, while yellow-fleshed kiwifruit sell for around 120,000–130,000 dong ($4.62–5.00) per kilogram. By comparison, yellow-fleshed kiwifruit from New Zealand and France are typically priced between 180,000 dong ($6.92) and 280,000 dong ($10.77) per kilogram, depending on variety and size.

According to some fruit shop owners, the Vietnamese market has seen an ample kiwifruit supply this year, with Chinese products accounting for a large share. Although Chinese kiwifruit may not be as visually attractive as those from New Zealand or France, their quality has become more stable, making them popular among many consumers, especially those who prioritize price.

Many suppliers on e-commerce platforms are also offering kiwifruit at low wholesale prices, but most are smaller in size, typically 12–14 fruits per kilogram. These products are mainly supplied to budget fruit stores or sold online in inexpensive mixed packs.

A representative of a fruit import company supplying supermarket chains in Ho Chi Minh City noted that Chinese kiwifruit benefit from large production volumes, lower labor costs and large-scale cultivation, giving them a competitive advantage. Meanwhile, kiwifruit from New Zealand and France maintain their positions in the mid-to-high-end market with relatively higher but stable prices, targeting consumers willing to pay more for quality and brand value.

According to data from Vietnam Customs, the country imported approximately $3 billion worth of fruit and vegetables in 2025, up 24% from 2024. China remains Vietnam’s largest source of fruit and vegetable imports, with the import value exceeding $1 billion. The substantial supply of kiwifruit from China, combined with price adjustments by traditional suppliers such as New Zealand and France in response to competition, has led to noticeable price differences in the Vietnamese kiwifruit market across different origins and market segments.
