Chancay–Shanghai Route Boosts and Streamlines China’s Fruit Imports From Peru [1]

According to a recent news report [3] by Shanghai Observer, data from Shanghai Customs show that 170 voyages were operated on the Chancay–Shanghai route in the first eight months of this year, handling 141,000 metric tons of import and export cargo valued at 4.04 billion Chinese yuan ($603 million), year-on-year increases of 13.7% and 33.3%, respectively.

As a key hub in the Peru–China fruit trade, Shanghai ports handle more than 70% of Peru’s fruit imports into China. In the first seven months of this year, Shanghai ports dealt with 41,000 metric tons of fruit from Peru, up by 4.4% year on year and accounting for 87.2% of China’s total fruit imports from Peru.

Recently, 12.2 metric tons of fresh blueberries were loaded into refrigerated containers at Peru’s Chancay Port [4] and shipped to Shanghai aboard COSCO Shipping’s WSA5 Chancay–Shanghai express service, marking the first pilot application of a mutually recognized inspection and supervision system for the cold-treatment probes used in fruit imports.

Previously, after Peruvian blueberries [5] arrived at the port, Chinese customs officers had to open the containers to verify the placement of cold-treatment probes and confirm that they met the required standards, making for a time-consuming process. Now, China and Peru have jointly developed a data mutual-recognition system. When loading fruit into containers, Peruvian exporters can submit information on probe placement and compliance verification to Chinese authorities through the system in accordance with the agreed requirements. As a result, the need to open containers at the arrival port for probe verification will be reduced by more than 90%, while the inspection time for each container will be shortened by nearly half a day.

On Sept. 2 of this year, the first shipment of 19.6 metric tons of fresh bananas from Peru [6] completed customs clearance in Shanghai, marking the first official entry of fresh Peruvian bananas into the Chinese market. The Chancay–Shanghai route, which opened in late 2024, had handled a total of 355,000 metric tons of import and export cargo worth nearly 10 billion yuan ($1.49 billion) as of Sept. 1, 2026. Over the same period, the number of cargo types carried on the route increased from 34 to 75.
