Apples (⇨)

At the wholesale level, very few arrivals have been recorded, while stocks are gradually being cleared. The action is really taking place in retail at the moment, with New Zealand commanding over 60% of all retail data we have collected in the past three weeks, followed by China, which is mainly dominated by Fuji. Blueberries (⇩)

Wholesale pricing has declined slightly further this week across all blueberry varieties. Currently, Magica is the most dominant variety available, followed by Sekoya Pop and then Ventura. Magica is pricing mostly between ¥100 and ¥110 (1.5 kg), with some goods pricing above the ¥120 threshold. At these values, Magica is well below 2023 levels and around 21% below the same week of 2024. Across eight major retailers, we have recorded an average retail price of ¥15.37 (125 g) compared to a value of ¥22.00 (125 g) last year. View market data [5].

Cherries (★)

We are in the third week of the cherry season, and it has ramped up rather quickly. Week 45 registered falling prices, which is common at this early stage of the season; however, the price decline has been sharp, with varieties such as Royal Dawn, Black Rock, Nimba and early Santina all pricing below the previous two seasons. Royal Dawn is down 39% versus 2024 for 5-kilogram packs, and Santina is down 33% (5 kg). The fruit is filtering through to retail with pricing averaging ¥194 (1 kg) in the middle of the week. These prices have already softened and should ideally come down further next week to stimulate demand. View market data [6].

Oranges (⇨)

New arrivals of Southern Hemisphere oranges are all but finished. As of week 44, South African Valencia pricing was in line with the 2023 season, with average sales between ¥90 and ¥110 (15 kg, various sizes), while Midknight oranges were trading similarly. In retail, average pricing sits at ¥21 (1 kg), with high-value Australian goods pricing at the top of the range at ¥34 (1 kg) and Chinese oranges on the lower end at around ¥13.60 (1 kg).
